Waylon Payne’s Blue Eyes\, The Harlot\, The Queer\, The Pusher & Me (releasing 9/11/20 via Carnival Recording Company / Empire) is such a moment\, the culmination of an extraordinary journey set to music.  \nA son of country music royalty\, a teenaged Baptist preacher turned addict and actor\, Payne sings about fathers and sons\, faith and addiction\, recovery and renewal with devastating clarity. His character-rich collection harks back to a way of telling stories in song that revealed kept secrets and promised mystery. Over his years\, Payne has felt the terrible power secrets can hold and learned the transformative value of releasing them. Finally\, he’s in a place where he can harness that power to create transcendent work.  \nPayne recorded Blue Eyes\, The Harlot\, The Queer\, The Pusher & Me primarily at Southern Ground Nashville\, a converted century-old church building just off Music Row that once housed Monument Studios. Payne’s mother\, country singer Sammi Smith\, cut her iconic version of Kris Kristofferson’s “Help Me Make It Through the Night” at Monument. When Payne recorded his vocals\, he says\, “I stood in the same spot she stood and sang while she was pregnant with me.”  \nTo help realize his musical vision\, Payne worked with producers Eric Masse (Miranda Lambert\, Rayland Baxter\, Robert Ellis) and Frank Liddell (Lambert\, Lee Ann Womack\, Chris Knight) to assemble a group of musicians that spanned both genres and generations. In addition to highly regarded players like bassist Glenn Worf; guitarists Jedd Hughes\, Ethan Ballinger\, and Kris Donegan; and drummer Blake Oswald\, the team brought in Cage the Elephant guitarist Nick Bockrath\, as well as Mickey Raphael\, Willie Nelson’s longtime harmonica player and a former band mate of Payne’s father\, Jody Payne. Jerry Roe\, like Payne a second-generation music man whose father spent years working for Johnny Cash\, played both bass and drums. Other musicians on the album include longtime guitar player and friend Dean Person\, slide guitarist Harrison Whitford\, and violist Kristin Wilkinson\, who arranged and conducted all the strings.  \nAs a result\, Blue Eyes\, The Harlot\, The Queer\, The Pusher & Me sounds both timeless and out of time. It exists in music’s liminal spaces\, the way the late ‘60s and early ‘70s albums of Kris Kristofferson and Bobbie Gentry did in their day. “Bobbie’s my songwriting hero\, the reason I do what I do — her and Kris\,” Payne says. “When my family threw me out\, I picked the toughest motherfucker I could think of and modeled myself after him. I learned how to be a man watching Kristofferson.”  \nLike those artists\, Payne draws from tradition while stretching beyond any notions of the mainstream\, ultimately standing apart from everything else.  \nPayne has come a long way from the first time he and Liddell met back in the ‘90s when Liddell worked for Decca Records. Payne showed up at Liddell’s office\, unannounced\, declaring his intentions to become a country star. It was the same sort of bold approach Tammy Wynette had made walking in on Billy Sherrill about a block away and 30 years before\, and\, like Wynette\, Payne hadn’t brought any songs to bolster his case. Still\, Liddell found Payne’s combination of raw talent\, personal magnetism\, and determination compelling\, even if it still needed to be focused.  \nPayne eventually figured out how to harness those abilities\, releasing his first album and launching an acting career that included portraying Jerry Lee Lewis in the 2005 Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line and Nashville guitar legend Hank Garland in 2008’s Crazy. At the same time his career seemed to be coming together\, though\, a drug problem that had started in his teens was developing to a full-blown meth addiction that was ripping Payne’s life apart. “I was acting like a spoiled rock star\,” he says. “By the time I started making movies\, my ego was a little out there. Then you add meth to that\, and you turn psychotic without realizing it.”  \nNow eight years clean\, Payne finally can put all the elements of his life in their proper place. Blue Eyes\, The Harlot\, The Queer\, The Pusher & Me testifies to a decade-long journey\, capturing songs and moments from his most troubled time\, as well as the grace and the relationships that led him out of it.  \nThere’s tenderness to these songs\, an empathy for lost souls who may or may not find their way home. Payne wrestles with the legacy of family dysfunctions in songs like “Sins of the Father” and “What A High Horse.” A pair of poignant vignettes\, “Shiver” and “Old Blue Eyes\,” team with tragedy and chilling beauty. “There are jewels buried deep in the record\, and if you’re a junkie\, you’ll catch them\,” Payne says.  \nHe views “Dangerous Criminal” as his point of reckoning. “It’s basically me admitting I have a problem\,” he says. “I am a person who will get himself into trouble and in danger unless I keep myself in check.”  \n“After the Storm” and “Precious Thing” play like prayers\, while “Santa Anna Winds” was written as a lullaby for the young boy whose voice is the first thing heard on the album\, a child Payne views as almost a son and by whose first birthday he marks his sobriety. Payne also recorded his own version of “All the Trouble\,” the GRAMMY- nominated song he wrote with Lee Ann Womack and Adam Wright and which Womack recorded for her 2017 album The Lonely\, The Lonesome & The Gone. Payne’s talent as a songwriter has also been recognized by artists Ashely Monroe\, Miranda Lambert and Wade Bowen\, who have chosen to record his songs.  \nPayne may have recorded Blue Eyes\, The Harlot\, The Queer\, The Pusher & Me in Nashville\, but it started a decade ago in Texas\, as he came through the worst of his addiction and got clean with the help of family and friends there. “For a while\, I couldn’t even write\,” he says. “I couldn’t put thoughts together\, because I had really fried my brain. Once I got sober\, everything came.”  \nFor Payne\, each song reflects a different situation in his life. Together\, though\, they tell of a prodigal son returning home — not to the family of his birth\, but home to the true self he’d once nearly abandoned.  \n“The essential DNA elements of this record are my self-written confessions and pleas for forgiveness\,” he says. “It all revolves around me getting right with myself and the universe. His vocals are very distinctive\, as well as his bass playing; that sets the stage for us to do a lot of things acoustically with modern bluegrass as a base.”\n\n\n“There are many different shades of blue in 21st century bluegrass\,” said industry veteran Nancy Cardwell. “I think folks are going to like the way he combines traditional and progressive grooves\, some gospel and even some reggae—and it’s almost exclusively his own original music.”\n\n\nCardwell has the kind of voice and stage presence that leaves an audience spell-bound and makes converts wherever he plays. As a band leader\, music director or sideman\, Ray has performed and toured extensively with bluegrass\, Americana\, country\, jazz\, reggae\, blues\, musical theater\, rock\, Motown\, choral and rockabilly groups.\n\n\nRays return to bluegrass came in 2015 when Producer/guitarist Pat Flynn heard a demo of his originals. After meeting with Pat\, Ray decided that it was time to return to his roots.\nHis Debut CD Tennessee Moon(2017) on Pinecastle Records was received with high praise with 10 songs charting on Bluegrass\, Americana\, Gospel and Folk Charts.\n\n\nTime To Drive was the first single release from Ray’s sophomore CD Stand On My Own which was released on May 24th 2019 “Time To Drive” debuted at #1 on Bluegrass Today’s Grassicana Chart. It remained on the charts top 15 for 6 months. “Alright” debuted at #1 on the Grassicana Charts and “Hurricane Rain at #2 Before it made its way to #1. The title track Stand On My Own debuted at #4 on the same chart\n\n\nJust a Little Rain (09/25/20) is Ray’s 3rd CD on Bonfire Music Group Records. His resume goes beyond singer/songwriter\, including head sound engineer at The Blue Note\, master stage builder at Rose\, friend to many and a fantastic storyteller. Most recently he portrayed Neil Diamond in the reenactment of The Last Waltz performed at The Blue Note and in St. Louis. He was drawn back to the stage in 2012 and has since picked up the mandolin. \nTracy is influenced by a wide variety of musical genres: from punk to country and blues to alt-rock. He is currently a member of Rose Ridge with Jenny Babcock. The duo often shares the stage with Mid Mo’s plethora of fine pickers. Occasionally\, you will find Tracy playing a solo gig. DESCRIPTION:Doors@4pm/SHOW@8:00pm \nTICKETS $5 Advance/$7 at the Door \nTABLE RESERVATIONS $10 SOLD OUT \nReserve Table/Purchase Tickets HERE!   FACEBOOK LINK    \n \n          Down Side Up was formed in 2006 by 5th graders: Ryan Mankin\, Aaron Mankin\, and Joe Lawler in order to blow Immaculate Conception’s student body’s mind at the 5th grade talent show. The show would go down infamously in history and Down Side Up’s journey would begin. Joe Lawler soon after parted ways\, but will always remain a founding member. In order to prepare for the 7th grade talent show Ryan and Aaron would join forces with friends Jason Kremer (lead guitar) and Adam Buhr (bass). This team in fact did go on to nail their talent show performance and make several house party\, birthday\, and county fair appearances. Freshmen year of high school the band once again parted. Aaron Mankin and Ryan Mankin were soon introduced to Helias High School Senior\, Hunter O’Donnell\, bass player. The three of them and guitarist Jason Kremer once again prepared for yet another talent show but their audition was denied. Ryan Mankin\, Aaron Mankin\, and Hunter O’Donnell\, the current lineup\, began their long jouney of vengeance\, delving deep into themselves and harnessing their Rock n’ Roll chakra. The trio began playing bars/music venues in 2013 at such establishments as the Mission in Jefferson City\, MO and later the Bridge in Columbia\, MO\, now located in Jefferson City. Down Side Up released their first EP “Down Side Up”\, recorded and produced by Pete Szkolka Music Productions\, in March of 2015. The band has since released three singles: “Hollow Street”\, “50 Reasons”\, and “Jibberish”\, recorded and produced by Jack Gue with Winksigh Recorders formerly known as Meth Lab Recording Studio. If you’re not ready to book shows of your own\, how can you get comfortable on a stage? Open mic events can solve the problem.\n\n\nOpen mic nights serve as incubators for beginning musicians\, or for more practiced types\, they are a great way to test new material before throwing it into a big show. For the totally fresh player\, it can be a daunting experience. Here are 9 tips to rock open mic so you will be prepared to take the stage and get the most out of the experience. \n9 Tips to Rock Open Mic\n1. Know what kind of an open mic it is. Do a little research before you attend the event. Open mics are not universally the same. Some are all acoustic (no microphones or plugged-in instruments); some are coffeehouse-style where people sit in silence listening to players; some are jams where a backing band or equipment might be provided. Make a trip down to the open mic you’ve got in mind before you participate\, or contact the host to get the details. \n2. Everyone at an open mic knows it’s an open mic. People there are not expecting a Lady Gaga production to walk through the door. They’re expecting a musician (or possibly a small group) to share some material that might be polished\, or it might be the first time performed on a stage. Don’t stress about what people will think. They understand the spirit of the event. \n3. Feel totally comfortable with your material. You’ll probably only have a few songs (many open mics are set by a song or time limit\, usually about three songs or 15 minutes @ The Mission)\, so make sure you’re putting your best foot forward. Just in case you get rattled on stage\, make sure you know the tunes in and out.  \n4. Don’t stress about what to bring. Whoever is running the open mic will have equipment for you and they should be fully capable of setting you up with it. If you’ve never plugged in a guitar or sung into a microphone—don’t worry. They’ll make sure you do it right and that it sounds good. That’s part of the Open Mic experience at The Mission. We have a full back line: Guitars – acoustic/electric\, electric & amp and bass & amp. Full drum kit & Yamaha keyboard. Mics\, cables\, stands. And our sound technician is here to help. \n5. Don’t be afraid to ask. Open mic beginners may think they are completely at the host’s mercy. Truth is\, we’re here to make you sound good! That said\, if you can’t hear yourself\, vocals are too loud\, guitar is too quiet\, whatever\, by all means\, tell them! \n6. Don’t be afraid to trust. The host should understand their sound system very well\, so trust that once you’re settled on stage they’re making it sound right out front. If you’re happy with what’s in your monitor sound\, leave the rest to them. We know our system inside and out. It’s a small room and you have 15 minutes. Let us do our job and make the room sound perfect for your performance.  \n7. Support other players. If you don’t want to be judged\, don’t judge other people. Open mics are a place to try material you might not get to try on other stages. Celebrate the people who come to share their art. Cannot emphasize this enough! This is the spirit of Open Mic Nights at The Mission. Enough said. \n8. Network. Open mics are musician hangouts—take advantage! If you’re looking to start a band or find musicians to see elsewhere\, there’s a good chance they’ll be hanging out at an open mic. We’re on Season 12 at The Mission full of Open Mic Stories of success. \n9. Learn from the experience. Every time you walk away from an open mic\, there is something to learn. How were you received? What feedback did people give you? Did you feel more comfortable? After teaching himself guitar at age 15\, his natural talent\, and curiosity\, led him to learn bass\, blues harmonica\, banjo\, keys\, and drums. “Kick Me!” his first serious band\, formed at the age of 19. They recorded a demo\, and from that\, and countless free gigs\, his fans formed a foundation. Zak recorded a solo album in December of 2013 at Walker Studios in Gordonville\, Tx\, which was a collection of old and new songs he had written over time\, and produced by an old friend\, Tommy Walker. Together\, they have released the 3 song single “DEMO” with a full electric sound\, in fall of 2015. Zak traveled between states from 2013 to 2015 for work with Renaissance festivals. He used the opportunity to travel\, to play as often as he could\, gathering a few friends in different places\, before settling in Jefferson City\, MO. DESCRIPTION:Doors@4pm/Music 7-9pm \nNo Cover – Tips Kindly Appreciated \n                                                  \nI have experienced many uplifting and wonderful moments in my musical journey over the years. It started as a teenager when I would listen to the radio and hear my world come alive through the voices and instruments of the great artists and bands of that day. I would sing those songs while growing up in the small Southeast Missouri town where I lived\, in the cotton fields\, and all along the country roads where I roamed. I tried my hand at guitar with a friend on an old Sears and Roebuck model\, but it wasn’t until much later in college that I got more serious with the instrument. I took classical guitar\, along with piano and vocal lessons and graduated with a Music Education Degree. I earned a teaching certificate but instead of teaching in public schools I began a 15 year journey in church music. I used the guitar in working with youth and senior adults and directed a lot of very good choirs. I directed and performed seasonal programs\, conducted amateur orchestras and choir tours. I worked with a lot of wonderful people and many remain friends to this day. I eventually left church music and started working for the State of Missouri and music had to take a back seat to living and raising a family. During my tenure with the state I worked with more wonderful people\, many of which were excellent musicians. We even found time to occasionally plug some music into our work. And then came retirement and along with it a very large amount of time to fill. Time for doing more of what I loved. I dusted off the guitar and began my musical journey anew. One of the first things I did was to seek out like minded musicians who believed in the the life changing power of music as I did. And although it was a slow process\, I found a few locally and I’m discovering even more and making new friends as I continue writing\, singing\, and playing songs that reflect my musical journey – both old and new. A conformed church housed a bar in the front full of rogue townies\, and a lounge in the back. “Turn your phones off\,” the host of the lounge barked into the microphone. “Turn them off\, sit back\, and pay attention. This guy is quiet\, and he’s going to tell you some stories.” And my eyebrows raised when his hoarse voice breathed life into a quiet\, rapt crowd. With his eyes closed\, he sang songs -chunks of him offered up to a willing mass. “I’m not a singer\,” he said eventually\, looking down at his guitar. I leaned in to listen harder. “I’m not a guitarist. I’m a song writer. “In his songs were stories and in his stories were words pushed together that took my breath away\, and in his stories were words that oozed the Blood from the Before\, and in his stories were ripped edges. I wanted to know it all. I wanted to know the names of the chunks and I wanted to inspect the hole in his chest and I wanted to know where those melodies come from and I wanted to know how he chooses the words. I wanted to know what he has written on the scraps of paper in his wallet and I wanted to know if his handwriting changes when he knows it’s a good one. It was a listening lounge\, and we were supposed to be quiet and listen\, but he played a song we all knew. And we sang the words with him. We couldn’t help it -not one single person. A crooked grin formed behind the microphone and I’m fairly certain that’s why he does what he does. Not for the lights. Not for the cheers. For sure not for the money. He does it for the people that hear the story and say\, “Yes. Me\, too. I have been there\, too. “In a town out in the middle of the cornfields of Iowa\, a group of people sang the words back to him that he had written. A melody chunked out of one disaster from his life\, and sewn together with a rhyme\, and maybe that’s how you heal the hurt….Vulnerability. Standing up on a stage when you’d rather be holding a pen. If you’re not ready to book shows of your own\, how can you get comfortable on a stage? Open mic events can solve the problem.\n\n\nOpen mic nights serve as incubators for beginning musicians\, or for more practiced types\, they are a great way to test new material before throwing it into a big show. For the totally fresh player\, it can be a daunting experience. Here are 9 tips to rock open mic so you will be prepared to take the stage and get the most out of the experience. \n9 Tips to Rock Open Mic\n1. Know what kind of an open mic it is. Do a little research before you attend the event. Open mics are not universally the same. Some are all acoustic (no microphones or plugged-in instruments); some are coffeehouse-style where people sit in silence listening to players; some are jams where a backing band or equipment might be provided. Make a trip down to the open mic you’ve got in mind before you participate\, or contact the host to get the details. \n2. Everyone at an open mic knows it’s an open mic. People there are not expecting a Lady Gaga production to walk through the door. They’re expecting a musician (or possibly a small group) to share some material that might be polished\, or it might be the first time performed on a stage. Don’t stress about what people will think. They understand the spirit of the event. \n3. Feel totally comfortable with your material. You’ll probably only have a few songs (many open mics are set by a song or time limit\, usually about three songs or 15 minutes @ The Mission)\, so make sure you’re putting your best foot forward. Just in case you get rattled on stage\, make sure you know the tunes in and out.  \n4. Don’t stress about what to bring. Whoever is running the open mic will have equipment for you and they should be fully capable of setting you up with it. If you’ve never plugged in a guitar or sung into a microphone—don’t worry. They’ll make sure you do it right and that it sounds good. That’s part of the Open Mic experience at The Mission. We have a full back line: Guitars – acoustic/electric\, electric & amp and bass & amp. Full drum kit & Yamaha keyboard. Mics\, cables\, stands. And our sound technician is here to help. \n5. Don’t be afraid to ask. Open mic beginners may think they are completely at the host’s mercy. Truth is\, we’re here to make you sound good! That said\, if you can’t hear yourself\, vocals are too loud\, guitar is too quiet\, whatever\, by all means\, tell them! \n6. Don’t be afraid to trust. The host should understand their sound system very well\, so trust that once you’re settled on stage they’re making it sound right out front. If you’re happy with what’s in your monitor sound\, leave the rest to them. We know our system inside and out. It’s a small room and you have 15 minutes. Let us do our job and make the room sound perfect for your performance.  \n7. Support other players. If you don’t want to be judged\, don’t judge other people. Open mics are a place to try material you might not get to try on other stages. Celebrate the people who come to share their art. Cannot emphasize this enough! This is the spirit of Open Mic Nights at The Mission. Enough said. \n8. Network. Open mics are musician hangouts—take advantage! Paul honed his craft around the wood stove at the family cabin\, in churches\, and in the blues clubs of Kansas City and Springfield\, MO. While playing all over the great state of Missouri\, he earned a music degree and continues to earn a reputation for connecting people with story songs and skillful guitar work.
