If you’re not ready to book shows of your own\, how can you get comfortable on a stage? Open mic events can solve the problem. \n\n\nOpen mic nights serve as incubators for beginning musicians\, or for more practiced types\, they are a great way to test new material before throwing it into a big show. For the totally fresh player\, it can be a daunting experience. Here are 9 tips to rock open mic so you will be prepared to take the stage and get the most out of the experience. \n9 Tips to Rock Open Mic \n1. Know what kind of an open mic it is. Do a little research before you attend the event. Open mics are not universally the same. Some are all acoustic (no microphones or plugged-in instruments); some are coffeehouse-style where people sit in silence listening to players; some are jams where a backing band or equipment might be provided. Make a trip down to the open mic you’ve got in mind before you participate\, or contact the host to get the details. \n2. Everyone at an open mic knows it’s an open mic. People there are not expecting a Lady Gaga production to walk through the door. They’re expecting a musician (or possibly a small group) to share some material that might be polished\, or it might be the first time performed on a stage. Don’t stress about what people will think. They understand the spirit of the event. \n3. Feel totally comfortable with your material. You’ll probably only have a few songs (many open mics are set by a song or time limit\, usually about three songs or 15 minutes @ The Mission)\, so make sure you’re putting your best foot forward. Just in case you get rattled on stage\, make sure you know the tunes in and out.  \n4. Don’t stress about what to bring. Whoever is running the open mic will have equipment for you and they should be fully capable of setting you up with it. If you’ve never plugged in a guitar or sung into a microphone—don’t worry. They’ll make sure you do it right and that it sounds good. That’s part of the Open Mic experience at The Mission. We have a full back line: Guitars – acoustic/electric\, electric & amp and bass & amp. Full drum kit & Yamaha keyboard. Mics\, cables\, stands. And our sound technician is here to help. \n5. Don’t be afraid to ask. Open mic beginners may think they are completely at the host’s mercy. Truth is\, we’re here to make you sound good! That said\, if you can’t hear yourself\, vocals are too loud\, guitar is too quiet\, whatever\, by all means\, tell them! \n6. Don’t be afraid to trust. The host should understand their sound system very well\, so trust that once you’re settled on stage they’re making it sound right out front. If you’re happy with what’s in your monitor sound\, leave the rest to them. We know our system inside and out. It’s a small room and you have 15 minutes. Let us do our job and make the room sound perfect for your performance.  \n7. Support other players. If you don’t want to be judged\, don’t judge other people. Open mics are a place to try material you might not get to try on other stages. Celebrate the people who come to share their art. Cannot emphasize this enough! This is the spirit of Open Mic Nights at The Mission. Enough said. \n8. Network. Open mics are musician hangouts—take advantage! If you’re looking to start a band or find musicians to see elsewhere\, there’s a good chance they’ll be hanging out at an open mic. We’re on Season 13 at The Mission full of Open Mic Stories of success. \n9. Learn from the experience. Every time you walk away from an open mic\, there is something to learn. How were you received? What feedback did people give you? Did you feel more comfortable? How did you compare with the other players? Honestly analyze the event to improve your performance next time. And take the compliments even if you know you made mistakes. You still entertained folks. \n(10) And finally\, HAVE FUN! Open mics are meant\, most of all\, to be fun. Musicians get to mingle\, everyone gets to play\, and even if you have the biggest flub of all time—it’s all in the spirit of open mic. To take the stage at all is to win. Enjoy it\, learn from the experience\, and have a good time! Join us for Open Mic Night\, share some air and feel the Mission Magic!

Paul honed his craft around the wood stove at the family cabin\, in churches\, and in the blues clubs of Kansas City and Springfield\, MO. While playing all over the great state of Missouri\, he earned a music degree and continues to earn a reputation for connecting people with story songs and skillful guitar work. Heavily influenced by the Springfield Sound and the blues scene in Kansas City\, Paul currently resides near his grandparent’s home in Jefferson City\, Missouri where you can find him playing his red Fender Stratocaster wherever people gather to share life\, love\, and music.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nYou will find Paul performing as a solo artist\, duo or sitting in with full bands\, including the powerhouse blues band\, Buddha Blue…a perfectly well rounded musician and performer. You may have seen Paul at Gumbo Bottoms\, Rose Music Hall\, Logboat Brewery\, The Outpost\, The Mission just to name a few. DESCRIPTION:Doors@4pm\nSHOW@8PM\nAdvanced Tickets $6\nTickets @Door $8\nTable Reservations $15 \n A special Friday Night appearance with Pat Kay!! \nFACEBOOK {Pat Kay} \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBanjos + kick drums = dance party\n\nMissouri native salutes the music traditional to the Ozarks; where Old-Time Fiddle music received a quick flash fry of foot stompin’ Country Blues as it made its way across the Mississippi River. The songs are a collection of stories\, often ancient in verse but timeless in meaning\, and carried with reverence for this forgotten music bred to uplift from the tangle of struggles in a bygone era. The arrangements and delivery\, however\, represent a convergence of music roots separated at birth in Western Africa where the banjo was conceived. It’s widely known that traditional bluegrass music doesn’t allow drums. In this\, aptly coined “Stompgrass” music\, percussion is not only encouraged\, but required… and the ease with which a banjo and a hypnotic tribal rhythm reunite waves a fist in the face of convention. So\, too\, does the execution; with vocals\, a kick drum\, foot tambourine\, guitar\, banjo\, harmonica\, and more all incredibly being performed at the same time by one person.\n\n\n————————————————————\nPat’s full band\, The Kay Brothers\, released their Self-Titled Debut Album in 2018 and followed by companion videos for their songs\, “Find Your Love” and “Cumberland Gap.” Joined by brothers Bryan & Jake as well as sisters Emma & Olivia Burney\, the band boasts sibling harmonies\, upright bass\, guitar\, tenor banjo\, fiddle\, cello\, ukulele\, harmonica\, washboard\, congas\, shakers\, and an array of foot percussion. Their mission: to preserve the rural music of our forefathers and mothers that once filled the wooden barns dotting the countryside on Saturday night and the small family churches on Sunday morning. The party is still going on…. it’s in your blood… and a new album from the band is presently underway.

At the age of 13\, you could find him performing in bars with local adult bands playing guitar\, drums and singing. He paused his public performances after high school\, but never put the guitar down. He was drawn back to the stage in 2012 and has since picked up the mandolin. \nTracy is influenced by a wide variety of musical genres: from punk to country and blues to alt-rock. He is currently a member of Rose Ridge with Jenny Babcock. The duo often shares the stage with Mid Mo’s plethora of fine pickers. Occasionally\, you will find Tracy playing a solo gig. Those are pretty sweet. You should catch one. \nRose Ridge – Tracy Blase & Jenny Babcock \nhttps://themissionjc.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Rose-Ridge-Feelin-Good-cover-JB-Lenoir.mp3 \n  \nhttps://themissionjc.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Rose-Ridge-Got-Me-A-Woman-cover-Levon-Helm.mp3 \n\n\n\n \n

SUMMARY:FunkyTonk Band {LIVE!!} @ The Mission
DESCRIPTION:Doors@6pm\nSHOW@8PM\n$5 Cover \nFACEBOOK {FunkyTonk Band}\nhttps://themissionjc.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/FunkyTonk-Band-2.mp4 \nhttps://themissionjc.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/FunkyTonk-Bank.mp4 \nhttps://themissionjc.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/FunkyTonk-Band-3.mp4 \nCombining four of Central Missouri’s country music superstars\, Funkytonk is a fresh re-visit to the best country of yesterday but scattered\, smothered and covered in masterfully crafted guitar licks\, tight grooves\, and tasty vocals. No Aldeans\, Bryans\, or Florida Georgia anythings…..just quality\, smokin’ country with a taste of rock and whatever else we sprinkle in…. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBen Van Dyke – Lead Guitar/Rhythm Guitar/Concerned Looks Towards The Rhythm Section\n\n\nIn High School\, he was once voted “most likely to succeed David Hasselhoff in Baywatch”. Instead\, he scored the lead part in a live stage production entitled “Meet Me In Fullerton” which was the story of a young soon to be musical pioneer in search of his hot tub time machine….or something like that.\n\n\nAt any rate\, the production ran for a staggering 4.5 hours and played in QuickTrip parking lots all over the Midwest. Just like David Hasselhoff\, Ben is HUGE in Germany.\n\n\n \nThese days\, Ben spends his time teaching his herd of Amazonian Pick Beetles to recreate the half time formations of the Mizzou Marching band. It’s truly riveting.\n\n\n \nHe’s also currently the Hot Licks Operations Manager for Funkytonk and his responsibilities include making sure Kyle remembers to walk to the A\, and Neil remembers the difference between major and minor chords.\n\n\nAs a side note\, Ben spends so much time dining at the local Mexican restaurant\, the owners refer to him as The Angry Enchilada\, The Hispanic Titanic\, and last but not least\, because of his love of their massive #4 burrito….The Mexicutioner so if you want to make a request\,\, approach Ben’s side of the stage with a great deal of caution.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nNeil Harms – Lead Vocals and Guitar\n\n\nProud to hail from the town where the Phillips head screwdriver was invented\, Neil was once known to collect dryer lint to sculpt into likenesses of his favorite guitar heroes.\n \n\n\nNeil has spent the last few years as an over the phone therapist specializing in issues plaguing aging guitarists. His therapy practice is vastly successful mostly due to the accent he uses when he speaks to his clients as it bears an uncanny resemblance to 80’s celebrity sex therapist\, Dr Ruth.\n \n\n\nWhile a long term member and good steward to the local music scene\, his fierce guitar prowess will often leave you speechless at a Funkytonk show however\, we caution you to reconsider should you ever decide to approach him to request “Wagon Wheel”…..go on\, we dare ya \n\n\n\nKyle Caraway – Bass/Vocals \nThis sexy hunk of 5 o’clock shadow is the most introverted member of the band. Kyle has spent the last 11 years hiding in a one bedroom flat in Point Place\, Wisconsin while spraying rental shoes in the local bowling alley. \nNeil knew he had a bass player with a true appreciation of the classics when he found out Kyle once worked as a staffer for the Hollywood Squares TV show and was in charge of managing Rip Taylor’s moustache wax\, inventorying Paul Lynde’s ascots\, and maintaining Phyllis Diller’s bikini line. \nBetween shows\, Kyle can be found at local nursing homes giving back to the community by grinding toenails for short-armed senior citizens. \nFunkytonk performances will guarantee you will get to witness Kyle sweating bullets trying to keep up with the musical genius of the other members of the band while managing the responsibility of having the biggest G string in the venue and hearing the voice of his bass sensei who used to provide Kyle encouragement by saying\, “I like the thing you tried to do there” (that’s for you Al)……. \nOn a side note\, Kyle is from the town where the flathead screwdriver was invented so he and Neil knew each other over the years from competing against each other in the community screwdriver flag football tournaments. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Parr – Drums and Backing Vocals \nHe may look like a well seasoned musician\, but this suave and debonair fella recently retired from a life as the hair stylist for British double agents with the famed MI-6 secret service\, left his Renault LeCar behind\, and recently returned to central Missouri to reconnect with his musical roots. \nAt a Funkytonk show\, you can look forward to Chris not only creating and holding the pocket as the anchor of Central Missouri’s fiercest new rhythm section\, but he’ll also be in the parking lot of the venue collecting donated roadkill as he is the chief hat maker for Silver Dollar City’s gift shop (drumming doesn’t pay as good as fixing hair in England). \n\n\n\n  \n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Those Guys! {Return} @ The Mission
DESCRIPTION:Doors@4pm \nSHOW@8:30pm \nCover Charge – $5 \nFACEBOOK {Those Guys} \n\n\nClint Krcmar – Drums\, vocals\, maniacal faces\, shrieks and howls.\nHarrison Sweazea – Guitar\, vocals\, lyrical adjustments and general confusion. \nHow THOSE GUYS got their name.\na short story by Anthony Pierce\nOnce upon a time\, there were two drummers\, Clint and Harrison. Both of these men were talented percussionists seeking gigs\, as that is what has kept them young – or at least it works for Clint\, Harrison just keeps aging\, but GRACEFULLY. They decided that one would play guitar and one would drum and they would bring music to Mid-Missouri and joy and laughter to all of their adoring fans and friends. The only thing that was missing was a good\, short\, memorable name. \nAt first\, they discussed names and decided since all the other bands that they had been a part of came up with their own names and they were flashy\, cute\, or themed\, that these two wanted just to be plain and simple with their band name. But there’s already a local band name Plain & Simple\, so that didn’t work. They decided that if they went with the name Clint and Harrison\, it would help with their billing because well\, C comes earlier in the alphabet. However\, with Harrison being a wee bit older – by like 4 decades – they decided that Harrison’s name should be the lead. And thus the duo\, Harrison & Clint\, began.\nAs they began booking gigs\, they found it long-winded\, like this story\, and difficult for everyone to keep saying\, “Harrison and Clint”\, so it was decided they would use a nickname for Harrison and remove the “and” to get a simple two-word band name. And so launched the new duo\, “Harry Clint”. \nUnfortunately\, at their first gig at the parish school fundraiser\, the poster had a slight misspelling as did all of the handouts for the evening’s agenda. There was opening prayer\, there was a thank you from the priest\, a fun auction of items to raise money\, and then it listed closing out the evening with dancing to the whimsical performance of\, “Harry Clit”. \nAfter Sister Magdalen passed out\, Sister Gertrude turned beet red and screamed\, “Who are these musicians with such a vulgar name?” The entire congregation turned and pointed to the duo and said “Those Guys!” And the name has forever stuck! \nI personally am sorry that they went through that long\, enduring\, and painfully humiliating experience – maybe not\, they could have been snickering the whole time – as they searched for the true name of this musical genius duo that so entertains us. Although\, I gotta admit\, having “Harry Clit at the BluTaco”\, probably wouldn’t have gone over well either.

SUMMARY:JOE STAMM BAND!!! {Returns} @ The Mission
DESCRIPTION:Doors@4pm\nSHOW@8PM\nTickets @Door $10\nTable Reservations $20  SOLD OUT \nFACEBOOK {Joe Stamm Band} \nWEBSITE {Joe Stamm Band} \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nJoe Stamm Band’s newest country-rock album is as brutally authentic as the Midwestern plains and people that inspire these songs. A year-round working musician\, Stamm has become something of an anthropologist of the tiny towns dotting middle America. Thanks to his fondness for this so-called flyover country\, and his crew of down-home troubadours\, Stamm has created the soundtrack to the heart of America: Midwest Town (release date 9-10-21). \nJSB\, established in 2013\, offers distinct storytelling mixed with a signature Black Dirt Country Rock sound – a sound that Stamm defines as “a nod to our Midwestern roots\, as well as the Red Dirt music scene\, which has had a big influence on our music.” Fans can expect the fearless Black Dirt Country Rock sound from Dave Glover’s inventive lead guitar\, Bruce Moser’s fortifying bass\, and Tim Fiers’ heart-pounding drums on the new album. \nCutting his teeth playing in middle-of-nowhere dives\, Stamm earned the stage presence and grit it would take to support artists like Chris Knight\, Blackberry Smoke\, Sunny Sweeney\, Tyler Childers\, Whiskey Myers\, Jamey Johnson\, and more. It’s the same blue-collar outlaw spirit from his early days that Stamm brings to any stage and every audience today. \n“There’s a sinewy\, rootsy texture to his inflections\, always evocative and drenched in a rock ‘n roll spirit.” — B-Sides & Badlands \nAs a native to the creek banks\, cornfields\, and barstools of central Illinois\, Stamm quite literally represents the Midwest’s collective story. Taking his high school football team to state\, suffering an injury in college\, learning to play guitar in his downtime – it’s all part of Stamm’s journey to the stage. Yet\, throughout Midwest Town\, he solidifies that he’s more than the heartland’s football-star-turned-rockstar. Stamm digs deeper\, unearthing relatable stories of a Vietnam vet\, a long-haul trucker\, a medicine man\, a family broken apart. Storytelling at its rawest? Yes. Biographical to America? Absolutely. \nDescribing the band’s second full-length studio album\, Stamm explains\, “Midwest Town isn’t about one kind of person. It’s about all of us and our shared experiences. It’s about relating to someone else’s story–maybe even someone you’ve never met before.” \nObviously curated with care\, the album kicks off with a chugging\, distorted guitar and Stamm’s friendly twang. Whether or not you’ve experienced a tour across the middle of America\, “Pocketful of Quarters” will sit you down on that stool in a roadside diner\, swapping stories with a seasoned trucker. The narrative stream continues into the album’s namesake\, “Midwest Town.” This single will make you think of Turnpike Troubadours in their prime\, cicadas buzzing on a hot summer day\, and a place – maybe a “two-lane Midwest town” – you left long ago. \n“Empty Places\,” a ghostly ballad many will recognize from Stamm’s acoustic album\, Stories: Live & Unplugged\, spotlights his gift for place and character formation. An eerie reminder of America’s darker qualities\, this song is as honest and unforgiving as the January wind blowing across snow-scorched plains. \nStamm also delivers the two-steppin’ drinking songs that pair well with classics like James McMurtry’s “Choctaw Bingo” and Garth Brooks’ “Ain’t Goin’ Down’ (‘til the Sun Comes Up).” And throughout the middle of the album\, his words will make you see yourself as a blue-collar worker just trying to get by\, a wild townie chasing down a dream\, and a father who finds that “it pays more to fill a pipe with smoke.” \nToward the end of the record\, Stamm and the band take a subtle detour in time and place. While the album was produced in Iowa and Nashville\, “The Ghost” could’ve just as easily been written\, recorded\, and mastered in the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound Studio. This bayou rock anthem is as menacing as it is bluesy\, betraying a strong Whiskey Myers influence on the band’s sound. \nFinally\, Stamm makes his way back home\, ending with a lonesome acoustic track that’s probably as autobiographical as any song on this record. A song that reinforces Midwestern Gentleman’s musing: “[Stamm’s] story is an American tale.” \nJoe has honed his craft for writing the way folks speak\, using specifics to relate universally\, and finding happiness in the little things. Joe Stamm Band has taken those words and stories and matched them to country-rock riffs that will keep Midwest Town spinning round ‘n’ round your turntable.

Since then Clay has joined our ever popular early show and ALL NIGHT HAPPY HOUR on Tuesday evenings. Benne also opened our stage for legendary singer-songwriter\, Josh Morningstar!  Order delivery\, bring in carry out and join us for some Live and Local.  Keepin’ it Live and supporting LOCAL! \n“For me\, music started when I would ride in my dad’s truck with the radio stuck on classic rock. Growing up around it made me want to pick up a guitar and learn to play along. But it wasn’t until late in high school that I understood how much of a hold it had on me\, even more so when there’s a girl involved. Artists like Eric Church and Kip Moore helped me make sense of a lot of things in my life and inspired me to want to do it for myself by writing my own songs. Music has always been there for me in any situation and I hope that I can share that with others.” – Clay Benne \nhttps://themissionjc.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/xTz0ahqIQY0JB94.mp4 \nhttps://themissionjc.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/wjtz26FB3UmkorK.mp4 \nhttps://themissionjc.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/HnwhDZj4UVm0kkT.mp4 \nhttps://themissionjc.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/K60qOLEzbKmgXnU.mp4

The show would go down infamously in history and Down Side Up’s journey would begin. Joe Lawler soon after parted ways\, but will always remain a founding member. In order to prepare for the 7th grade talent show Ryan and Aaron would join forces with friends Jason Kremer (lead guitar) and Adam Buhr (bass). This team in fact did go on to nail their talent show performance and make several house party\, birthday\, and county fair appearances. Freshmen year of high school the band once again parted. Aaron Mankin and Ryan Mankin were soon introduced to Helias High School Senior\, Hunter O’Donnell\, bass player. The three of them and guitarist Jason Kremer once again prepared for yet another talent show but their audition was denied. Ryan Mankin\, Aaron Mankin\, and Hunter O’Donnell\, the current lineup\, began their long jouney of vengeance\, delving deep into themselves and harnessing their Rock n’ Roll chakra. The trio began playing bars/music venues in 2013 at such establishments as the Mission in Jefferson City\, MO and later the Bridge in Columbia\, MO\, now located in Jefferson City. Down Side Up released their first EP “Down Side Up”\, recorded and produced by Pete Szkolka Music Productions\, in March of 2015. The band has since released three singles: “Hollow Street”\, “50 Reasons”\, and “Jibberish”\, recorded and produced by Jack Gue with Winksigh Recorders formerly known as Meth Lab Recording Studio. The boys of Down Side Up play their original music as well as classic rock and 90s covers all over Jefferson City and Columbia\, Missouri\, and are always working on new material which they hope to release in the future. \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n             \nAaron Mankin – drums and vocals Ryan Mankin-guitar and vocals Hunter O’Donnell- Bass guitar \n    \n\n
