Waylon Payne’s Blue Eyes\, The Harlot\, The Queer\, The Pusher & Me (releasing 9/11/20 via Carnival Recording Company / Empire) is such a moment\, the culmination of an extraordinary journey set to music.  \nA son of country music royalty\, a teenaged Baptist preacher turned addict and actor\, Payne sings about fathers and sons\, faith and addiction\, recovery and renewal with devastating clarity. His character-rich collection harks back to a way of telling stories in song that revealed kept secrets and promised mystery. Over his years\, Payne has felt the terrible power secrets can hold and learned the transformative value of releasing them. Finally\, he’s in a place where he can harness that power to create transcendent work.  \nPayne recorded Blue Eyes\, The Harlot\, The Queer\, The Pusher & Me primarily at Southern Ground Nashville\, a converted century-old church building just off Music Row that once housed Monument Studios. Payne’s mother\, country singer Sammi Smith\, cut her iconic version of Kris Kristofferson’s “Help Me Make It Through the Night” at Monument. When Payne recorded his vocals\, he says\, “I stood in the same spot she stood and sang while she was pregnant with me.”  \nTo help realize his musical vision\, Payne worked with producers Eric Masse (Miranda Lambert\, Rayland Baxter\, Robert Ellis) and Frank Liddell (Lambert\, Lee Ann Womack\, Chris Knight) to assemble a group of musicians that spanned both genres and generations. In addition to highly regarded players like bassist Glenn Worf; guitarists Jedd Hughes\, Ethan Ballinger\, and Kris Donegan; and drummer Blake Oswald\, the team brought in Cage the Elephant guitarist Nick Bockrath\, as well as Mickey Raphael\, Willie Nelson’s longtime harmonica player and a former band mate of Payne’s father\, Jody Payne. Jerry Roe\, like Payne a second-generation music man whose father spent years working for Johnny Cash\, played both bass and drums. Other musicians on the album include longtime guitar player and friend Dean Person\, slide guitarist Harrison Whitford\, and violist Kristin Wilkinson\, who arranged and conducted all the strings.  \nAs a result\, Blue Eyes\, The Harlot\, The Queer\, The Pusher & Me sounds both timeless and out of time. It exists in music’s liminal spaces\, the way the late ‘60s and early ‘70s albums of Kris Kristofferson and Bobbie Gentry did in their day. “Bobbie’s my songwriting hero\, the reason I do what I do — her and Kris\,” Payne says. “When my family threw me out\, I picked the toughest motherfucker I could think of and modeled myself after him. I learned how to be a man watching Kristofferson.”  \nLike those artists\, Payne draws from tradition while stretching beyond any notions of the mainstream\, ultimately standing apart from everything else.  \nPayne has come a long way from the first time he and Liddell met back in the ‘90s when Liddell worked for Decca Records. Payne showed up at Liddell’s office\, unannounced\, declaring his intentions to become a country star. It was the same sort of bold approach Tammy Wynette had made walking in on Billy Sherrill about a block away and 30 years before\, and\, like Wynette\, Payne hadn’t brought any songs to bolster his case. Still\, Liddell found Payne’s combination of raw talent\, personal magnetism\, and determination compelling\, even if it still needed to be focused.  \nPayne eventually figured out how to harness those abilities\, releasing his first album and launching an acting career that included portraying Jerry Lee Lewis in the 2005 Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line and Nashville guitar legend Hank Garland in 2008’s Crazy. At the same time his career seemed to be coming together\, though\, a drug problem that had started in his teens was developing to a full-blown meth addiction that was ripping Payne’s life apart. “I was acting like a spoiled rock star\,” he says. “By the time I started making movies\, my ego was a little out there. Then you add meth to that\, and you turn psychotic without realizing it.”  \nNow eight years clean\, Payne finally can put all the elements of his life in their proper place. Blue Eyes\, The Harlot\, The Queer\, The Pusher & Me testifies to a decade-long journey\, capturing songs and moments from his most troubled time\, as well as the grace and the relationships that led him out of it.  \nThere’s tenderness to these songs\, an empathy for lost souls who may or may not find their way home. Payne wrestles with the legacy of family dysfunctions in songs like “Sins of the Father” and “What A High Horse.” A pair of poignant vignettes\, “Shiver” and “Old Blue Eyes\,” team with tragedy and chilling beauty. “There are jewels buried deep in the record\, and if you’re a junkie\, you’ll catch them\,” Payne says.  \nHe views “Dangerous Criminal” as his point of reckoning. “It’s basically me admitting I have a problem\,” he says. “I am a person who will get himself into trouble and in danger unless I keep myself in check.”  \n“After the Storm” and “Precious Thing” play like prayers\, while “Santa Anna Winds” was written as a lullaby for the young boy whose voice is the first thing heard on the album\, a child Payne views as almost a son and by whose first birthday he marks his sobriety. Payne also recorded his own version of “All the Trouble\,” the GRAMMY- nominated song he wrote with Lee Ann Womack and Adam Wright and which Womack recorded for her 2017 album The Lonely\, The Lonesome & The Gone. Payne’s talent as a songwriter has also been recognized by artists Ashely Monroe\, Miranda Lambert and Wade Bowen\, who have chosen to record his songs.  \nPayne may have recorded Blue Eyes\, The Harlot\, The Queer\, The Pusher & Me in Nashville\, but it started a decade ago in Texas\, as he came through the worst of his addiction and got clean with the help of family and friends there. “For a while\, I couldn’t even write\,” he says. “I couldn’t put thoughts together\, because I had really fried my brain. Once I got sober\, everything came.”  \nFor Payne\, each song reflects a different situation in his life. Together\, though\, they tell of a prodigal son returning home — not to the family of his birth\, but home to the true self he’d once nearly abandoned.  \n“The essential DNA elements of this record are my self-written confessions and pleas for forgiveness\,” he says. “It all revolves around me getting right with myself and the universe. A conformed church housed a bar in the front full of rogue townies\, and a lounge in the back. “Turn your phones off\,” the host of the lounge barked into the microphone. “Turn them off\, sit back\, and pay attention. This guy is quiet\, and he’s going to tell you some stories.” And my eyebrows raised when his hoarse voice breathed life into a quiet\, rapt crowd. With his eyes closed\, he sang songs -chunks of him offered up to a willing mass. “I’m not a singer\,” he said eventually\, looking down at his guitar. I leaned in to listen harder. “I’m not a guitarist. I’m a song writer. “In his songs were stories and in his stories were words pushed together that took my breath away\, and in his stories were words that oozed the Blood from the Before\, and in his stories were ripped edges. I wanted to know it all. I wanted to know the names of the chunks and I wanted to inspect the hole in his chest and I wanted to know where those melodies come from and I wanted to know how he chooses the words. I wanted to know what he has written on the scraps of paper in his wallet and I wanted to know if his handwriting changes when he knows it’s a good one. It was a listening lounge\, and we were supposed to be quiet and listen\, but he played a song we all knew. And we sang the words with him. We couldn’t help it -not one single person. A crooked grin formed behind the microphone and I’m fairly certain that’s why he does what he does. Not for the lights. Not for the cheers. For sure not for the money. He does it for the people that hear the story and say\, “Yes. Me\, too. I have been there\, too. “In a town out in the middle of the cornfields of Iowa\, a group of people sang the words back to him that he had written. A melody chunked out of one disaster from his life\, and sewn together with a rhyme\, and maybe that’s how you heal the hurt….Vulnerability. Standing up on a stage when you’d rather be holding a pen. Sure looks an awful lot like courage.-Rebecca Cooper\, Author \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA curious and fresh combination of grit and humor\, Josh Morningstar is knocking down stereotypes with his worn boots and unforgettable raspy voice. Watching Hee-Haw and The Grand Ole Opry every night with that same great man added to my inspiration to pursue my passion for music. Once I hit the age of 5 my grandpa started showing me chords on the acoustic guitar which lead to starting guitar lessons with a Missouri Folk Music Legend Lee Ruth at Crazy Music in Columbia\, Missouri. Lee showed me how to put the chords together to form a song and introduced me to Traditional Folk and Bluegrass tunes. I continued lessons with Lee for about 8 years until I discovered the band Free and Jimi Hendrix. These artists steered me towards my love of the Les Paul and the Stratocaster sending me in a different musical direction. As the years went on I have been continuously influenced by bands such as The Allman Brothers\, The Band of Gypsies\, The Grateful Dead\, and Cream. Because of these influences I became partial to what is known as “The Southern Sound” or “Southern Rock”. It was that exact sound that paved the road ahead of me in my music career. Although “The Southern Sound” is my first love\, I still yearned for something more. This yearning sparked my journey with Solo Acoustic performances playing Old Gospel and traditional folk tunes. In 2010 my mother moved to New York City and I would soon follow her to experience the Big Apple myself. After living in New York City a year and a half I never really found a place I felt musically comfortable with. After the Towers fell on 9/11 I knew at that moment it was time go back home to Missouri where my heart truly lies. Once back in the Show Me State I started to immerse myself into the music scene of Columbia\, Missouri. I religiously attended the local Blues Jams and eventually befriended Ted & Shelly Tyson. The Tyson’s had a Chicago style Blues band called Serious Blues Band and they quickly invited me to become a member. We played our hearts out for 5 years before that yearning for something more started to overcome me and I made the decision to try my hand at forming my own band. I established The Highwater Band in 2014 with fellow bandmates Don Atchley and The Jolly Brother’s bassist Tim Shields. The excitement of my electric band needed some balance\, so I decided to go back that old Folk\, Country\, and Bluegrass music learning as many songs as I could to continue down the path of my solo acoustic career. Musical inspirations such as Jerry Garcia\, Kevin Welch\, and Bob Dylan added to my influence. After 3 years with The Highwater Band we parted ways in the Summer of 2017. Parting ways was a bitter sweet moment\, but it encouraged me to really find my place and allowed me more time to focus my energy on acoustic endeavors. I started writing my own songs with the first hit being a tune called “End Of The Line”. I pulled my inspiration from my moments living in New York City during 9/11 and the following year I wrote “Graveyard Showdown” building on those same experiences. I wanted to pay tribute to that same great man to started the whole thing and composed “His Guitar”. Music is more than just notes on a paper and words on a sheet\, its about the looks on fans faces after hearing my tunes which for me is priceless.” – Cody Pursifull

Just like David Hasselhoff\, Ben is HUGE in Germany.\n\n\n \nThese days\, Ben spends his time teaching his herd of Amazonian Pick Beetles to recreate the half time formations of the Mizzou Marching band. It’s truly riveting.\n\n\n \nHe’s also currently the Hot Licks Operations Manager for Funkytonk and his responsibilities include making sure Kyle remembers to walk to the A\, and Neil remembers the difference between major and minor chords.\n\n\nAs a side note\, Ben spends so much time dining at the local Mexican restaurant\, the owners refer to him as The Angry Enchilada\, The Hispanic Titanic\, and last but not least\, because of his love of their massive #4 burrito….The Mexicutioner so if you want to make a request\,\, approach Ben’s side of the stage with a great deal of caution.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nNeil Harms – Lead Vocals and Guitar\n\n\nProud to hail from the town where the Phillips head screwdriver was invented\, Neil was once known to collect dryer lint to sculpt into likenesses of his favorite guitar heroes.\n \n\n\nNeil has spent the last few years as an over the phone therapist specializing in issues plaguing aging guitarists. His therapy practice is vastly successful mostly due to the accent he uses when he speaks to his clients as it bears an uncanny resemblance to 80’s celebrity sex therapist\, Dr Ruth.\n \n\n\nWhile a long term member and good steward to the local music scene\, his fierce guitar prowess will often leave you speechless at a Funkytonk show however\, we caution you to reconsider should you ever decide to approach him to request “Wagon Wheel”…..go on\, we dare ya \n\n\n\nKyle Caraway – Bass/Vocals \nThis sexy hunk of 5 o’clock shadow is the most introverted member of the band. Kyle has spent the last 11 years hiding in a one bedroom flat in Point Place\, Wisconsin while spraying rental shoes in the local bowling alley. \nNeil knew he had a bass player with a true appreciation of the classics when he found out Kyle once worked as a staffer for the Hollywood Squares TV show and was in charge of managing Rip Taylor’s moustache wax\, inventorying Paul Lynde’s ascots\, and maintaining Phyllis Diller’s bikini line. \nBetween shows\, Kyle can be found at local nursing homes giving back to the community by grinding toenails for short-armed senior citizens. \nFunkytonk performances will guarantee you will get to witness Kyle sweating bullets trying to keep up with the musical genius of the other members of the band while managing the responsibility of having the biggest G string in the venue and hearing the voice of his bass sensei who used to provide Kyle encouragement by saying\, “I like the thing you tried to do there” (that’s for you Al)……. \nOn a side note\, Kyle is from the town where the flathead screwdriver was invented so he and Neil knew each other over the years from competing against each other in the community screwdriver flag football tournaments. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Parr – Drums and Backing Vocals \nHe may look like a well seasoned musician\, but this suave and debonair fella recently retired from a life as the hair stylist for British double agents with the famed MI-6 secret service\, left his Renault LeCar behind\, and recently returned to central Missouri to reconnect with his musical roots. \nAt a Funkytonk show\, you can look forward to Chris not only creating and holding the pocket as the anchor of Central Missouri’s fiercest new rhythm section\, but he’ll also be in the parking lot of the venue collecting donated roadkill as he is the chief hat maker for Silver Dollar City’s gift shop (drumming doesn’t pay as good as fixing hair in England). \n\n\n\n  \n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The narrative stream continues into the album’s namesake\, “Midwest Town.” This single will make you think of Turnpike Troubadours in their prime\, cicadas buzzing on a hot summer day\, and a place – maybe a “two-lane Midwest town” – you left long ago. \n“Empty Places\,” a ghostly ballad many will recognize from Stamm’s acoustic album\, Stories: Live & Unplugged\, spotlights his gift for place and character formation. This guy is quiet\, and he’s going to tell you some stories.” And my eyebrows raised when his hoarse voice breathed life into a quiet\, rapt crowd. With his eyes closed\, he sang songs -chunks of him offered up to a willing mass. “I’m not a singer\,” he said eventually\, looking down at his guitar. I leaned in to listen harder. “I’m not a guitarist. I’m a song writer. “In his songs were stories and in his stories were words pushed together that took my breath away\, and in his stories were words that oozed the Blood from the Before\, and in his stories were ripped edges. I wanted to know it all. I wanted to know the names of the chunks and I wanted to inspect the hole in his chest and I wanted to know where those melodies come from and I wanted to know how he chooses the words. I wanted to know what he has written on the scraps of paper in his wallet and I wanted to know if his handwriting changes when he knows it’s a good one. It was a listening lounge\, and we were supposed to be quiet and listen\, but he played a song we all knew. And we sang the words with him. We couldn’t help it -not one single person. A crooked grin formed behind the microphone and I’m fairly certain that’s why he does what he does. Not for the lights. Not for the cheers. For sure not for the money. He does it for the people that hear the story and say\, “Yes. Me\, too. I have been there\, too. “In a town out in the middle of the cornfields of Iowa\, a group of people sang the words back to him that he had written. (“To me\, the best songs are human and help us to realize how much we all share\,” McCurren says.) Debut single “Little Rock\,” inspired by John Prine\, a long roadtrip and a roadside motel\, finds the Midwest troubadour penning a homesick love song for his wife Margaret. “I had been on the road for a couple days\, following different rivers (mainly the Mississippi) and listening to different records (mainly CCR and John Prine’s ‘Sweet Revenge’) when I pulled into Little Rock. I booked the motel room based on the roadside\, neon sign I had seen on Google images\, usually a safe bet\, but when I checked-in the room was a complete mess and the AC wouldn’t turn off\,” McCurren tells Wide Open Country. “I probably could have had my room switched but the owner\, and from what I could tell the only employee\, was a sweet lady named Ramona that had run the place since the 60’s and I didn’t want to trouble her so I decided I’d go out and stay up late enough that I didn’t care that the bed sheets hadn’t been washed. I woke up the next morning with a hangover and a heartache for home and Margaret. I sang the lines into my phone on my drive back to Missouri and wrote it down as soon as I got home (after hugs and kisses).” The song’s video features Forrest and Margaret hitting the road for a scenic Missouri road trip. “Margaret and I met up with buddies\, and creative-forces-of-nature\, Brett Jackson (also a mid-Missourian) and Aaron Lawrence of Intrepid Creative. One of my favorite movie lines is from Cool Hand Luke when Paul Newman says\, ‘I never planned anything in my life’ and this video was no exception save one ‘planning’ aka whiskey-drinking session the night before\,” he says. “I wanted the video to reflect the chorus of the song\, being away from home and missing it and/or someone. The result was a long\, winding drive from Kansas City back to my Papaw’s (Big Forrest) farm in Mid-Missouri with Margaret in the passenger seat and the Intrepid Creative boys right behind. Important stops included: highway firework/cigarette store\, hidden Missouri river lookouts\, small town main streets\, Crazy Good Burritos in Columbia\, and the fields and forests of Callaway County.” Raised on the lyrics of Willie Nelson\, Bruce Springsteen and Townes Van Zandt\, McCurren values truth and human connection above all in his songwriting. “I never had a plan in my life; music has always given me something to keep mefocused\,” he says in a press statement. “I always try to write one true sentence. Most of the songs I have kept\, the first line I wrote was the first line of the song. Words come first\, then melodies get inspired by the words. I trust the quickness of the way I write. Artists like Eric Church and Kip Moore helped me make sense of a lot of things in my life and inspired me to want to do it for myself by writing my own songs. A conformed church housed a bar in the front full of rogue townies\, and a lounge in the back. “Turn your phones off\,” the host of the lounge barked into the microphone. “Turn them off\, sit back\, and pay attention. This guy is quiet\, and he’s going to tell you some stories.” And my eyebrows raised when his hoarse voice breathed life into a quiet\, rapt crowd. With his eyes closed\, he sang songs -chunks of him offered up to a willing mass. “I’m not a singer\,” he said eventually\, looking down at his guitar. I leaned in to listen harder. “I’m not a guitarist. I’m a song writer. “In his songs were stories and in his stories were words pushed together that took my breath away\, and in his stories were words that oozed the Blood from the Before\, and in his stories were ripped edges. I wanted to know it all. I wanted to know the names of the chunks and I wanted to inspect the hole in his chest and I wanted to know where those melodies come from and I wanted to know how he chooses the words. I wanted to know what he has written on the scraps of paper in his wallet and I wanted to know if his handwriting changes when he knows it’s a good one. It was a listening lounge\, and we were supposed to be quiet and listen\, but he played a song we all knew. And we sang the words with him. We couldn’t help it -not one single person. A crooked grin formed behind the microphone and I’m fairly certain that’s why he does what he does. Not for the lights. Not for the cheers. For sure not for the money. He does it for the people that hear the story and say\, “Yes. Me\, too. I have been there\, too. “In a town out in the middle of the cornfields of Iowa\, a group of people sang the words back to him that he had written. A melody chunked out of one disaster from his life\, and sewn together with a rhyme\, and maybe that’s how you heal the hurt….Vulnerability. Standing up on a stage when you’d rather be holding a pen. Sure looks an awful lot like courage.-Rebecca Cooper\, Author A curious and fresh combination of grit and humor\, Josh Morningstar is knocking down stereotypes with his worn boots and unforgettable raspy voice. On the heels of his 2019 LP Tryin’ To Be A Blessing\, Moore and his band were booked to perform over 300 shows for the tenth year in a row\, prepped and ready to continue tearing up asphalt between dive bars and honky tonks across the country. However\, as the global pandemic brought the live music industry to a screeching halt\, Moore suddenly found himself with something he wasn’t familiar with after all those years of constant touring: downtime. \n “I do most of my writing when I’m riding my Harley Davidson Road King or cutting grass\,” Moore notes. “Our tour schedule had been so heavy for the last several years that I hadn’t been doing very much of either. All of a sudden I found plenty of time to ride my bike and write.” \n The songs came quickly\, capturing a sense of renewed energy that Moore found in his downtime. \n “I hadn’t written a song in nearly two years\,” he recalls\, pointing to the silver linings of being pulled off the road. “All of a sudden\, eleven songs poured out in a three-week span. That makes The Rain different from anything I’ve ever done after all these years of constant touring.” \n Make no mistake\, though — The Rain is not a pandemic/quarantine-concept record — it still bears the timeless honky-tonk swagger for which Moore has become acclaimed over the years. From the flint-and-tinder autobiographical swagger of “Every Night I Burn Another Honky Tonk Down” to the timely awareness of “Better Days” and the album’s anthemic title track\, this is Dallas Moore at the height of his craft — a bona fide troubadour continuing down the path\, even if the path might look a little different after 2020. \n Moore and his band returned to Nashville’s OmniSound Studios — quickly becoming the band’s home court — to track the album\, once again tapping the renowned Dean Miller as producer. Moore’s self-proclaimed “Honky Tonk Dream Team Band” consisted of Chuck “Lucky Chucky” Morpurgo (Moore’s guitarist of 25 years)\, Tim Galloway and Guthrie Trapp on guitar duties\, Jenee Fleenor (CMA Instrumentalist of the Year) on fiddle\, Chad Cromwell on drums\, Steve Hinson on pedal steel and dobro\, Gordon Mote on piano and organ\, Lex Price on bass\, Sweepy Walker on harmonica and Perry Coleman on backing vocals. \n “These sessions were the most relaxed and enjoyable of my career\,” says Moore. “We had a lot of laughs and grins as the songs took shape and came to life organically and we got most of them in one or two takes\, which gave everything a live feel — which I’ve always wanted to capture in the studio. I think this album is my most focused and realized yet and another step in my journey as I kick the can a little farther down the road.” \n This live-in-a-room\, lightning-in-a-bottle energy permeates The Rain from top to bottom. Tracked in just two days\, it’s a snapshot of an ace songwriter and performer rolling with the punches in a year which had plenty to throw. A conformed church housed a bar in the front full of rogue townies\, and a lounge in the back. “Turn your phones off\,” the host of the lounge barked into the microphone. “Turn them off\, sit back\, and pay attention. This guy is quiet\, and he’s going to tell you some stories.” And my eyebrows raised when his hoarse voice breathed life into a quiet\, rapt crowd. With his eyes closed\, he sang songs -chunks of him offered up to a willing mass. “I’m not a singer\,” he said eventually\, looking down at his guitar. I leaned in to listen harder. “I’m not a guitarist. I’m a song writer. “In his songs were stories and in his stories were words pushed together that took my breath away\, and in his stories were words that oozed the Blood from the Before\, and in his stories were ripped edges. I wanted to know it all. I wanted to know the names of the chunks and I wanted to inspect the hole in his chest and I wanted to know where those melodies come from and I wanted to know how he chooses the words. I wanted to know what he has written on the scraps of paper in his wallet and I wanted to know if his handwriting changes when he knows it’s a good one. It was a listening lounge\, and we were supposed to be quiet and listen\, but he played a song we all knew. And we sang the words with him. We couldn’t help it -not one single person. A crooked grin formed behind the microphone and I’m fairly certain that’s why he does what he does. Not for the lights. Not for the cheers. For sure not for the money. He does it for the people that hear the story and say\, “Yes. Me\, too. I have been there\, too. “In a town out in the middle of the cornfields of Iowa\, a group of people sang the words back to him that he had written.
