Molly Healey is violinist, cellist, and singer-songwriter from Jefferson City, MO, currently residing in Springfield, MO. After several years on the road touring with acts such as Big Smith, Cornmeal, the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, and countless other Missouri-based bands, she began a solo project with just her violin, cello, voice, and a looping-effects pedal that allows her to record herself, and play multiple lines at one time. Her first solo album, Nightbirds, recorded with bassist Kyle Day at Centro-Cellar Studios in Columbia, MO, was released in the fall of 2015. Since recording Nightbirds, she and Kyle have joined forces with Zach Harrison on electric guitar, and now the group travels as a trio. Her sophomore album, Human, which also includes drums by Danny Carroll and backing vocals by Dallas Jones, was released in December of 2017.
The 2019 release of Circles is by far the fullest and most experimental of her now three albums in almost as many years. Molly has transitioned from using the loop station to aid the entire performance, to using it as just one of the many instruments on stage at her live performances. Circles is a full band recording from start to finish. At times, it ventures into tense and driving rock beats reminiscent of Radiohead, and at others, it showcases her folk-rock roots, harking the songwriting style of Dawes or Spoon; all the while lacing nearly every track with full string arrangements performed entirely by multi-tracking herself in the studio. Her classically-trained, powerhouse voice remains a hallmark of her sound. The title track is a full-blown dive into the depths of organized orchestral chaos, while White Noise explores the neuroses of an anxiety-ridden human mind. Meanwhile, tracks like Duplicity and To Whom It May Concern are tied to her stripped-down, singer-songwriter roots.
She has opened for Victor Wooten, Yonder Mountain String Band, and has played sets at Burning Man and for the Missouri Contemporary Ballet. Her band members are Zach Harrison on electric guitar, Kyle Day on bass, and Danny Carroll on drums. The Burney Sisters from Columbia, MO, make a guest appearance on the album as backing vocalists.
