Austin Beck & David Masterson
AUSTIN BECK
The beginning of my story starts very young, sitting in the middle of the back seat, traveling between Hermann and Jeff City with my Mom and Dad. I spent many hours as a youngen listening to all sorts of genres brought to me by my parents, brother, friends, and even distant relatives. I grew up mostly on country music at the time, but also various 90s pop artists from my brother, the classics of rock n roll from the parents, and even musical hits from Grease, Sound of Music, etc.
It didn’t hit me until later, maybe right before high school, when I realized how important music was to me. I did middle school band playing percussion which got me playing drums fairly early. But then I had a teacher my Freshman year see my passion, and he encouraged me to switch out of Algebra 2 and come into his choir. That is probably the top moment of my life that stirred me into the music world and I never looked back from it. Throughout high school I continued with choir which became my life. Singing is my favorite thing to do and probably always has been.
At 15 or 16, my brother Tyler taught me to play guitar. I watched him do it, and from a little inspiration from Guitar Hero I thought I could probably give this a try. With a couple years of guitar down, I gained more inspiration from my best friend, Justin Abokhai, to learn piano. Using the knowledge of guitar and music theory from Chorale, I just sat down at my moms piano and taught myself.
Then came the idea of the Beck Brothers, we wanted to take our jam sessions to the “big stage.” Tyler had already played there, and he knew I would love it. So where else in Jefferson City would one start playing live music? Open Mic Night with Quentin Rice at The Mission. The Beck Brother learned from countless open mic nights and finally got our first show there. From then on, we decided to branch out and play for friends and relatives at various events around town.
Besides the Beck Brothers, I’ve been in a couple other bands along the way. I love playing with new people and seeing all the awesome talent our hometown has brought up. I’m also in a barbershop chorus and quartet in St. Charles. I’m learning a lot and definitely becoming a better singer, and I believe I’m ready to start playing on my own and advertising myself for you all.
I play piano/guitar acoustic style covers. I have a couple originals but you most likely won’t hear them unless I ever start writing again. My goal is to try to play the songs my audience wants to hear, and every few songs I throw in a couple for me. I play mostly Classic Rock, semi-older country music, and then some random few that don’t fit in the first two categories. I just want to play and have a good time with you all who want to come out and listen. I’m always ready to have a laid back night of acoustic music. Thanks for liking my page and hope to see you all soon!
